Our grand tour of Rajasthan with Varanasi and Khajuraho reveals many of north India’s most famous sights, from the sacred river Ganges in Varanasi to the fairy-tale-like palaces of Udaipur. Start by discovering the contrasts of India’s bustling capital city, Delhi, before moving on to the holy city of Varanasi and the extraordinary carved temples of Khajuraho. Next, a stop in Agra introduces you to the world’s favourite monument to love; the Taj Mahal. We then cross into the colourful state of Rajasthan, to discover splendid forts and palaces in Jaipur and Jodhpur. Our journey ends on a special note in the romantic city of Udaipur, staying in one of the world’s most famous luxury hotels; the dreamy Lake Palace. Still, our Luxury Rajasthan with Varanasi and Khajuraho itinerary is merely a starting point designed to give you an idea of the possibilities. It can be tweaked or completely transformed to best suit you.
Upon landing, there’ll be the chance to freshen up at your hotel, The Lalit Temple View, before meeting your guide. This modern hotel is well located close to the Western group of temples, with many rooms having a distant view. Comfortable facilities, excellent service and a peaceful ambience.
You’ll begin exploring the temple complex in one of its most beautiful lights; at sunset. The most impressive of the temples is the Kandariya Mahadev Temple – over 800 sculptures adorn the structure, depicting gods and goddesses, beasts and warriors, sensuous maidens, dancers, musicians and, of course, the erotic scenes for which the temples in Khajuraho are famous.
In the early evening, your guide will meet you for a tour of the Ganges and its many ghats by boat, culminating with the evening aarti ceremony. These ancient rituals have changed very little over hundreds and hundreds of years. The scent of sandalwood and incense swirls around, while the sounds of prayer chanting and clashing symbols rise to a crescendo. Hundreds of little oil lamps flickering on the river are a beautiful sight.
Rather than retrace your steps back to Delhi, you may prefer to end your tour of Rajasthan with Varanasi and Khajuraho in Mumbai, with a two-night at the Taj Mahal Palace or The Oberoi Mumbai. Or, hit the beach with a relaxing few nights in Goa. For a broader exploration of the Rajasthan region, you might like to experience luxury camping in the Thar Desert at The Serai in Jaisalmer, or spot tigers in the jungle on safari in Ranthambhore. For inspiration, we recommend taking a look through our Insider’s Guide to Oberoi Hotels in India, and 25 of our favourite luxury experiences in Rajasthan. All our tours are private, and tailor-made to complement your taste and interests. In essence, the itinerary described above is just a starting point, and together we can refine it into your ideal Indian experience.
